In college, you will no doubt have seminars and courses on "multiculturalism" and "sensitivity training." They seem to be a ridiculous waste of time. Unfortunately, the rise of hate crimes makes it necessary for colleges to promote respect and understanding and open exchanges (which they're supposed to do anyway.) Gay/lesbian groups, religious groups, students with disabilities can all be targets. Although college students have (or should have) outgrown the petty high school idea that "different is uncool," some people just won't learn. It's much more fun to include people and to have all kinds of friends from different cultures. Don't rule out anyone. Someone who has, say, a learning disability could teach you more than you know

If you are a student with a disability, or if you want to get a perspective on what it's like to cope with a disability while attending college, read about community college student Laura Minges' experiences.

If you are a disabled student looking for resources, we've listed a few sites to point you in the right direction.

If you are a student with a disability, you probably didn't let it stop you from going out and giving your all in high school. It may seem harder to cope with college, study, getting around, work, and activities, but you don't have to go it alone. Don't forget to ask for help. Talk to a counselor, your dorm advisor, the health center, or a teacher.

Most colleges have a department that assists students with disabilities and assigns them another student who has volunteered to help. You may make a friend.
